Playing Career
Starting Out
Abraham François started playing football at just 7 years old. In 1997, he played for Quebec in the Canada Games and won the competition. He then represented Canada at the Francophonie Games in Madagascar, where his team also won.
After these wins, François joined St. Louis Ambush for an indoor football season. He played 15 games for them in 1997-1998. He also scored 2 goals in 8 games for the Detroit Rockers during the same season.
Joining Montreal Impact
In 1999, François was signed by his hometown team, the Montreal Impact. This was a big step, marking the start of his professional career. He played for them in both outdoor and indoor football seasons.
Loan to Sol de América
While still with the Montreal Impact, François went on loan to Sol de América in Paraguay for six months. A "loan" means he played for another team temporarily. He played alongside famous players like Dante Lopez and Enrique Vera.
Playing in Vietnam
After his time in Paraguay, François traveled to Asia. He signed with Tien Giang FC in Vietnam's top league, the V-League.
Success with Ottawa Wizards
In 2002, François returned to Canada and joined the Ottawa Wizards. This team was very strong in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
During his time with Ottawa, the team had an amazing season. They went 17 games without losing, which was a big achievement. The Wizards won three major titles in one season, known as a "treble." They won their conference, the Open Canada Cup, and the playoff championship.
Back to Montreal Impact
François returned to the Montreal Impact in 2003. He helped the team finish second in their league. They also won the Voyageurs Cup, a special trophy for Canadian teams.
In 2004, François was part of the Impact team that won the league championship. He had an injury to his right knee that season, which meant he couldn't play as much. However, the team still had a great year, going 12 games without losing at the start. They won the USL A-League Championship by beating the Seattle Sounders 2-0. This was their first championship win since 1994.
In 2005, he came back to the Impact but was later traded.
Moving to Toronto Lynx
On May 19, 2005, François was traded to the Toronto Lynx. He played his first game for them on May 28, 2005. The team had a tough season, finishing last in the league.
Laval Dynamites
In 2006, François signed with the Laval Dynamites in the Canadian Soccer League. He helped the team reach the playoffs, but they lost in the first round.
Detroit Ignition
On October 26, 2007, he joined the Detroit Ignition in the MISL. His time in Detroit was successful, as the team finished first in the regular season. They also reached the semi-finals in the playoffs.
François later said that he could have played for another year, but the amount of travel from Montreal made it too difficult.
International Games
In 1997, Abraham François played for Quebec in the Canada Games and won. He was then chosen to play for Canada at the Francophonie Games in Madagascar, where his team also won. At the 1997 Francophonie Games, he played alongside Patrice Bernier. One of his best memories was beating Cameroon 1-0 in the semi-finals.
