The Abraham J. Friedlander House is a special old house in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It was built a long time ago, in 1830. This house is important because of its unique design and its history.
Discovering the Friedlander House
The Abraham J. Friedlander House was built in 1830. It has three stories and three main sections (called bays) on its front. The main parts of the house, like its foundation and walls, are mostly made of sandstone. Some parts also use brick.
What Makes This House Special?
The house shows a strong Greek Revival style. This means it looks like ancient Greek buildings. You can see this style in the front door. It has a special window above the door, called a transom. There are also tall windows on either side of the door, called sidelights.
The person who designed the house is not known. But their work shows they were inspired by a famous architect named Minard Lafever. He wrote many books about different types of Classical Revival architecture. This style uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.
A Look at Its History
When the house was first built, it was a home for several people. In its early years, many different tradesmen lived there. A tradesman is someone who works in a skilled job, like a carpenter or a blacksmith. Later, the house was used as an office for a lawyer.
In 1979, the Friedlander House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. It was added because its old architecture was well-preserved. It was also important because of its connection to Abraham J. Friedlander.
One year later, a small part of Ninth Street became the Ninth Street Historic District. This area was also added to the National Register. The Friedlander House was named one of the important buildings in this historic district.
