Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Shāṭibī (born around 1320, died 1388) was an important Islamic scholar. He lived in a region called al-Andalus, which is now part of Spain. He followed the Sunni branch of Islam and the Maliki school of Islamic law. He passed away in Granada in 1388.
His full name was Ibrahim bin Mosa bin Muhammad al-Shatibi al-Gharnati. His family came from the Banu Lakhm. His nickname, or kunya, was "Abu Ishaq." He also had surnames like "Al-Lakhmi," "Al-Gharnati," "Al-Maliki," and "As-Shatibi." We don't know exactly when or where he was born. However, the name "As-Shatibi" suggests his family came from the city of Xàtiva.
His Amazing Books
Abū Isḥāq al-Shāṭibī learned from many great scholars of his time. He became very skilled in the Arabic language and in doing deep research from a young age. He would often discuss different topics with his teachers before making up his mind. He wrote several important books that are still studied today.
- Al-Iʻtiṣām (كتاب الاعتصام) - This famous book is like a huge encyclopedia about religious innovations. It helps explain what new practices are not part of traditional Islamic teachings. It has 10 chapters and was first published in Cairo in 1931.
- Al-Muwafaqaat fi Usool al-Sharia (الموافقات في اصول الشريعة) - This is another one of his most well-known books. It focuses on the principles of Islamic law (called Usul al-fiqh) and the higher goals of Islamic law (called Maqasid Al-Sharia). It was published in four volumes and has even been translated into English.
- Shara ala al-Khutasa - This book is about Ilm al-Nahw, which is the study of Arabic grammar.
- Al-Itifaq fi Elm al-Ishtiqaq - This book was about Ilm al-Sarf, which is the study of Arabic morphology (how words are formed). Sadly, this book was lost during his lifetime.
- Kitab al-Majalis - This book included his comments on a section of the famous Sahih Bukhari collection of sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.
- Kitab Al-ifidaat wa Al-inshadaat - This book was about literature and had two volumes.
