Abu-al-Hasan Ali ben Abdallah al-Nuymari as-Shushtari (Arabic: ابو الحسن الششتري), also known as Al-Sustari, was a very important person from a long time ago. He lived from 1212 to 1269. He was born near a place called Guadix in what was then Al-Andalus (now part of Spain). He passed away in Damietta.
Al-Shushtari was a Sufi teacher, a deep thinker (philosopher), a law expert (jurist), and a poet. He is most famous for his amazing poetry.
Who Was Al-Shushtari?
Al-Shushtari wrote poems that were meant to be sung. These songs used simple rhymes and everyday music. This made his songs very popular. Lots of people enjoyed them, not just his hundreds of students.
His special way of writing poetry helped spread his ideas. He wanted to praise God using music that everyone could understand and enjoy.
His Amazing Poetry
Many of Al-Shushtari's poems are still sung today! About 62 of his short poems, called "Tawshih," are part of the classical Andalusian music. This music is still very popular in North Africa and other parts of the Greater Middle East.
One of his most famous poems is A little sheikh from the land of Meknes (in Arabic, "Shewiyekh men-ard Meknes"). This song is still incredibly popular today, especially in the eastern parts of the Middle East.
