Abu l-Hasan Ali I (born June 30, 1688 – died September 22, 1756) was an important ruler of Tunisia. He was also known as Ali Bash or Ali Bey I. He led the Husainid Dynasty from 1735 to 1756.

The Story of Ali Bey I

Early Life and Rise to Power

Ali Bey I was the grandson of Ali Turki. His uncle, Husayn I Bey, became the ruler in 1705. Ali Bey I was first made governor of Sousse. Later, he was chosen as the next in line to rule, known as the heir apparent, in 1706.

In 1724, he received the special title of pasha from the Ottoman sultan. This was a high honor.

A Fight for Control

Two years later, Husayn I Bey changed his mind. He decided his own son, Muhammad, would be the next ruler instead of Ali. This made Ali very upset, and he started a rebellion.

With help from the leader of Algiers, Ali defeated Husayn in 1735. After entering the city of Tunis, Ali had to pay a lot of silver to the Algerian troops. He also promised to pay them a yearly tribute.

Husayn I Bey escaped and tried to keep ruling from other cities. Ali sent his son, Younes, to fight him. Husayn was captured and killed in 1740. However, Husayn's sons, Muhammad and Ali, escaped. They continued the fight against Ali Bey I.

Expanding His Territory

In 1741, Ali Bey I captured the island of Tabarka from the Republic of Genoa. He sent about 1,500 Christian people from the island to Tunis.

That same year, his son Younes led an attack against the French at Cap Nègre and captured it. The French tried to take Tabarka back in 1742, but Ali's forces successfully defended it.

Facing Challenges and Rebellions

In his later years, Ali Bey I faced two major rebellions. The first was led by his own son, Younes. Younes managed to take control of Tunis and declared himself the new ruler.

Ali Bey I fought back and forced Younes to flee to Algiers. The second rebellion came from the sons of Husayn I Bey, who had escaped earlier. They got help from the leader of Algiers and invaded Tunisia with a large army.

Ali had worked to make the walls of Tunis stronger. However, the Algerian army stormed the city on August 31, 1756. Ali was removed from power on September 2. He was taken to Algiers, where he was killed by supporters of his successor, Muhammad I ar-Rashid, about twenty days later.
