Early Soccer Days
Abuchi Obinwa was born in Columbus, Ohio. When he was younger, he played for Chicago Magic PSG. This team was connected to the famous French club Paris Saint-Germain.
In 2013, he was named the best player in his age group for the Central Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He also spent time training with the youth teams of Paris Saint-Germain and the Spanish club Real Madrid.
On January 29, 2015, Abuchi signed his first professional contract with the German club Hannover 96. He played six games for their Under-19 team over two seasons. He also sat on the bench once for the Hannover 96 reserve team.
Playing for Clubs
Columbus Crew SC Journey
On January 25, 2017, Abuchi joined his hometown team, Columbus Crew, which plays in Major League Soccer. He played his first game for Columbus in a friendly match on July 17. This was against the German team Eintracht Frankfurt.
He came into the game in the 67th minute, helping his team win 1–0. Abuchi spent the rest of that season playing on loan for another team. He did not play in any official games for Columbus Crew SC.
On December 1, 2017, Columbus Crew SC decided not to keep Abuchi on their team. He left the club after just one season.
Loan to Pittsburgh Riverhounds
On March 25, 2017, Columbus Crew SC sent Abuchi on loan. He went to their partner team, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, in the USL. Abuchi played his first professional game on April 8, 2017. This was against the Charleston Battery.
He entered the game early in the first half and helped his team win 2–1. Four days later, on April 12, he started his first professional game. This match was against Saint Louis FC. Abuchi played for 67 minutes in that game. He played in seven games for Pittsburgh that season.
Playing in Portugal
In 2018, Abuchi Obinwa moved to Portugal. He joined a team called Lusitano FCV. This club plays in Portugal's third soccer division.
Back in the United States
Abuchi returned to the United States on December 12, 2019. He signed with South Georgia Tormenta FC, a team in USL League One.
On January 20, 2022, Abuchi joined FC Tulsa, a club in the USL Championship. He played 19 games for FC Tulsa. He left the team after the 2022 season.
Playing for His Country
Abuchi Obinwa has played for the United States national youth teams. He has represented the U15, U16, U17, U18, and U20 teams.
In 2014, he played three games for the U18 team in a tournament in Lisbon, Portugal. He also played two games for the U20 team in a tournament in Serbia in 2015.
Abuchi has dual citizenship, meaning he is a citizen of two countries. He can choose to play for the United States or the Nigeria national team. His parents are both from Nigeria, so he also qualifies to play for their team.
Age Questions in Nigeria
In July 2013, when Abuchi was sixteen, there was a discussion about his age. He was being considered to play for the Nigeria U17 team for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Even though he had all his official papers from the United States, there was a disagreement about his age after a medical test. Nigeria went on to win that tournament.
