Scientific classification

The banded sergeant (scientific name: Abudefduf septemfasciatus) is a cool fish that lives in the ocean. It belongs to a family of fish called Pomacentridae, which are often found near coral reefs. These fish are part of a larger group known as Perciformes, which includes many different kinds of ray-finned fish.

What Does the Banded Sergeant Look Like?

The banded sergeant fish can grow to be about 23 centimeters long. That's almost the length of a standard ruler! Male fish can reach this size. They get their name "banded sergeant" because they often have stripes or bands on their bodies, similar to the stripes on a sergeant's uniform.

Where Does the Banded Sergeant Live?

This fish loves to live in warm, shallow ocean waters. You'll find them around beautiful coral reefs, which are like underwater cities for many sea creatures. They usually stay in depths from 0 to 3 meters, which means they prefer the parts of the ocean closest to the surface. The banded sergeant is a non-migratory fish, meaning it doesn't travel long distances. It tends to stay in the same general area its whole life.

Where Can You Find Them Around the World?

Banded sergeants live in a wide area of the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. You can find them all the way from the eastern coast of Africa across to the Line Islands and the Tuamotu archipelago. They also live south of Japan and down to the southern parts of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
