The Acacia armillata is a type of tree that belongs to the Acacia family. It is a special kind of plant because it only grows naturally in certain parts of north-eastern Australia. This makes it an "endemic" species, meaning it's unique to that area.

What Does Acacia armillata Look Like?

This tree can grow quite tall, reaching about 8 meters (around 26 feet) high. It has branches that hang down, making it look graceful. These branches are smooth and have small, lens-shaped bumps called lenticels.

The bark near the bottom of the trunk is rough and grey. Higher up, the bark becomes smoother and has a mixed pattern of colors. Like most Acacia species, this tree does not have true leaves. Instead, it has special flattened leaf stalks called phyllodes.

These phyllodes stay green all year round. They are smooth and feel a bit like thin leather. Their shape can be narrow and oval, or like a spearhead. They can be straight or slightly curved like a sickle. Each phyllode is usually 7.5 to 18 centimeters (about 3 to 7 inches) long. They are also 5 to 35 millimeters (about 0.2 to 1.4 inches) wide. Each phyllode has between four and ten main veins running through it.

Where Does Acacia armillata Grow?

This tree is found in Far North Queensland in Australia. However, its populations are "disjunct," meaning they are spread out in separate areas. These areas are quite far apart from each other.

You can find Acacia armillata in three main spots. These spots are located on or near the Great Dividing Range on Cape York Peninsula.

  • One area is around Iron Range Mining.
  • Another area is near Mount Janet.
  • The third area is where the Walsh River and Price Creek meet.

In these places, the Acacia armillata usually grows as part of a woodland. It often grows alongside other trees like Eucalyptus normantonensis or Eucalyptus cullenii.
