Occurrence data from AVH

Acacia praelongata is a type of shrub or small tree. It belongs to the Acacia family, which is also known as wattles. This plant is special because it only grows naturally in certain parts of northern Australia.

What Does It Look Like?

This plant usually grows into a slender tree, about 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 feet) tall. It has branches that hang down gracefully. The bark is hard and has grooves, and its small branches are smooth.

Like most Acacia plants, it doesn't have regular leaves. Instead, it has something called phyllodes. These phyllodes are like flattened leaf stems that do the job of leaves. They are long and thin, hanging down, and stay green all year. They are about 12 to 24 centimeters (5 to 9 inches) long and 1 to 3.5 millimeters wide. Each phyllode has three main veins, with the middle one being the easiest to see.

How Was It Named?

The first official description of Acacia praelongata was made by a botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller. He wrote about it in 1884.

Later, in 2003, another botanist, Leslie Pedley, changed its name to Racosperma praelongatum. But then, in 2006, it was moved back to the Acacia group. So, its official name is still Acacia praelongata.

Where Does It Grow?

You can find Acacia praelongata in the northwestern parts of the Northern Territory in Australia. It grows on Melville Island in the north and as far south as Katherine.

It likes to grow in gravelly, reddish-brown soils. You'll often see it scattered among open woodlands and forests in these areas.

Growing This Plant

Acacia praelongata is available to buy for gardens. People use it in rock gardens or to fill in empty spaces. It's known for needing little water, making it a good choice for dry areas. It also works well as a screen plant to create privacy. Plus, it attracts birds and butterflies, making gardens more lively!
