What does Acacia striatifolia look like?

This shrub or tree can grow up to 8 m (26 ft) (about 26 feet) tall. It has dark grey bark that feels rough and bumpy, like a corrugated iron roof. Its younger branches are reddish-brown. They are somewhat flat at the tips and have small bumps, especially when new.

Like many Acacia species, it doesn't have typical leaves. Instead, it has special flattened stems called phyllodes. These phyllodes are blue-green and shaped like narrow ovals. They are usually straight and measure between 3.9 to 9.5 cm (1.5 to 3.7 in) long and 10 to 40 mm (0.39 to 1.57 in) wide.

The phyllodes feel smooth (this is called glabrous). They have tiny bumps, especially near their base. You can also see three to five clear lines or "nerves" running along them.

Acacia striatifolia blooms between August and September. It produces bright golden flowers. These flowers grow in long, cylinder-shaped spikes, about 3 to 5 cm (1.2 to 2.0 in) long. Each spike is packed with many deep yellow flowers.

After the flowers, thin, papery seed pods form. These pods are smooth and straight. They are a bit squeezed between the seeds and raised over them. The pods are 3 to 8.5 cm (1.2 to 3.3 in) long and about 3 to 3.5 mm (0.12 to 0.14 in) wide. Inside, they hold brownish to black seeds. Each seed is a narrow oval shape, about 4 to 4.5 mm (0.16 to 0.18 in) long.

Where does Acacia striatifolia grow?

This plant is only found in one specific area. It grows in the Darling Downs district of Queensland, Australia. It prefers to live in areas with rolling hills or bumpy land. You can find it in state forests north of a town called Chinchilla.

Acacia striatifolia likes shallow, sandy, and gravelly soils. It often grows as part of a Eucalyptus woodland community. Sometimes, it even forms its own thick groups of plants.
