The Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española, which means Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language, is a group of smart people who are experts in how Spanish is used in Puerto Rico. They work to protect and study the Spanish language. This Academy started in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on January 28, 1955. It is part of a bigger group called the Association of Spanish Language Academies.

What Does the Academy Do?

The Academy works closely with the Royal Spanish Academy to help keep the Spanish language strong. One of their main jobs is to add new words to the official Spanish dictionary, called the Diccionario de la lengua española. This helps the language grow and stay current.

For example, in 2017, the Academy played a big part in adding the word "reguetón" to the official Spanish dictionary. This shows how they help include words that are important to Puerto Rican culture and everyday life.

The Academy also created a special website. This website has a lot of Puerto Rican words and phrases. You can search for words by different topics, which makes it easy to learn about local vocabulary.

History of the Academy

The Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española was founded on January 28, 1955. It was started by two important people, Samuel R. Quiñones and José A. Balseiro. They held the first meeting at The Puerto Rican Athenaeum.

Before this Academy, there was an earlier group called the Antillean Academy of the Language. It was started in 1916 by José de Diego. The current Academy continues the important work of studying and protecting the Spanish language in Puerto Rico.

Where is the Academy Located?

The main office of the Academy is in the Ballajá Barracks. This historic building is located in Ballajá, which is part of Old San Juan in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's a beautiful and important place for such a significant organization.
