Exploring Ballajá's History
Ballajá gets its name from the famous Ballajá Barracks. These old military buildings are now home to the amazing Museum of the Americas. You can also find the impressive El Morro fortress here. It's a great place to learn about the past!
Puerto Rico's Journey
Long ago, Spain controlled Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,217 people lived in Ballajá at that time.
