San Juan Antiguo is a special area, or barrio, located in the city of San Juan, which is the capital of Puerto Rico. It's important not to confuse San Juan Antiguo with the historic part called Old San Juan, even though Old San Juan is actually inside San Juan Antiguo! This area is made up of seven smaller parts called subbarrios.
In 2010, about 7,085 people lived in San Juan Antiguo. It is located entirely on the Isleta de San Juan, which is a small island just off the coast of Puerto Rico. This island is connected to the main land by bridges and a road.
History of San Juan Antiguo
In the late 1800s, San Juan Antiguo was known as Plaza de San Juan. This was where Spain had its important military buildings and strong forts. These forts were built to protect the city.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico.
