Akademio de Esperanto facts for kids
The Akademio de Esperanto (often called AdE) is an important group of people who speak Esperanto. Their main job is to help the Esperanto language grow and stay consistent. They make sure it follows the original rules set by its creator, L. L. Zamenhof. Think of them as the "language guardians" for Esperanto!
This group is a bit like the academies for other languages, such as the French Academy. L. L. Zamenhof himself suggested creating this group. It was first formed after the very first World Esperanto Congress. Back then, it was called the Lingva Komitato (Language Committee). Later, in 1948, this committee and another group called the Akademio joined together. That's how the Akademio de Esperanto we know today was formed.
The Akademio has 45 members. It also has a president, vice presidents, and a secretary. You can contact them through the secretary. The group gets money from the Universal Esperanto Association and from people who donate.
Who Are the Members?
Members of the Akademio are chosen by other members. They serve for nine years. Elections happen every three years to pick new members for about a third of the spots. After the most recent elections in February 2022, these are the current members of the Akademio de Esperanto:
