Achatinella pulcherrima is a special type of air-breathing land snail. It is a land mollusk that belongs to the gastropod group. This snail is part of the Achatinellidae family. It is found only on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This means it is an endemic species, living nowhere else in the world.
A scientist named Henry Augustus Pilsbry once thought this snail was a type of Achatinella byronii. However, it is now known as its own unique species.
What Does the Achatinella pulcherrima Snail Look Like?
The shell of the Achatinella pulcherrima snail is usually right-handed. This means if you hold the shell with the tip pointing up, the opening is on the right side. The shell is shaped like an oval and is somewhat slender. Some shells might be a bit wider or more rounded than others.
The shell has six whorls, which are the spiral turns of the shell. The colors of the shell can vary a lot. They might be white or yellow. Some shells have several wide bands of a dark reddish-brown color, like chestnut.
The edge of the shell's opening is often brown. The main color of the shell can be a deep, rich reddish-brown. This main color might have one to three bands of orange, yellow, or white. There is also a clear groove near the suture, which is the line where the whorls join.
The shell is about 20.0 millimeters (0.79 inches) tall. It is about 11.2 millimeters (0.44 inches) wide.
