This helped him choose what to study and what job to do later. He studied painting for three years. At the same time, he acted in plays and sometimes in movies.

In 1984, Achero and his family moved to New York City. He got a scholarship, which is like a special grant to help pay for school. He studied acting at the Actors Studio. After he came back to Spain, he kept acting. He worked with many famous directors. Some of them were Ridley Scott and Carlos Saura.

When his daughter Laura was born, Achero decided to stop acting. He wanted to become a filmmaker instead. He wrote and directed his first short film, Metro, in 1995. This film won the Luis Buñuel Prize. It also won the Best Short Film Prize at a festival in Italy.

In 1996, he made his second short film, Cazadores (which means Hunters). He wrote, directed, and produced it. This film won several awards, including a Goya Award for Best Fictional Short Film. The Goya Awards are very important in Spanish cinema. In 1997, he made his third short film, Paraísos Artificiales (Artificial Paradises). This one also won important awards from Spain and other countries.

El Bola (The Ball) was Achero's first full-length movie. It came out in 2001. Both movie critics and the public really liked it. The film won many awards in Spain and around the world. It won four Goya Awards. These included Best Original Screenplay, Best New Actor, Best New Director, and Best Film of the year. It also won the Fassbinder Award.

In 2002, Achero and his brother Federico wrote his second full-length movie, Noviembre (November). This film also won many important awards. It won the FIPRESCI Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also won the Youth Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
