About Achero Mañas
Early Life and Education
Achero Mañas was born in Madrid, Spain. His mother, Paloma Lorena, was an actress. His father, Alfredo Mañas, was a playwright, which means he wrote plays. Growing up, Achero was always around theatre, books, and art. This helped him choose what to study and what career to follow.
He studied painting for three years at a school called Escuela de Artes y Oficios. At the same time, he acted in plays and took on small roles in movies.
Moving to New York and Acting Career
In 1984, Achero Mañas moved to New York City with his family. His mother helped him get a scholarship to study at the Actors Studio. This is a famous place where many great actors have trained.
After returning to Spain, he continued his acting career. He worked with many famous directors. Some of these directors include Adolfo Aristarain, Carlos Saura, and Ridley Scott.
Becoming a Filmmaker
When his daughter, Laura, was born, Achero Mañas decided to stop acting. He wanted to become a filmmaker instead. He wrote and directed his first short film, Metro, in 1995. This film won the Luis Buñuel Prize for its cinematography (how it was filmed). It also won the Best Short Film Prize at a festival in Montecatini.
In 1996, he wrote, directed, and produced his second short film, Cazadores (Hunters). This film won several awards, including a Goya Award for Best Fictional Short Film. The Goya Awards are like the Oscars in Spain.
In 1997, he made his third and last short film, Paraísos Artificiales (Artificial Paradises). This film also won important awards both in Spain and other countries.
Directing Feature Films
His first full-length movie, El Bola (The Ball), came out in 2001. Both critics and the public really liked it. The film won many national and international awards. It received four Goya Awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best New Actor, Best New Director, and Best Film of the year. It also won the Fassbinder Award.
In 2002, Achero Mañas wrote his second feature film, Noviembre (November), with his brother Federico. This movie also won several important awards. It received the FIPRESCI Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also won the Youth Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
A year later, a French TV channel asked Mañas to direct a documentary. This film was about the peace process in Northern Ireland. He interviewed important people involved in the conflict. These included Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams and Nobel Peace Prize winners John Hume and David Trimble.
Mañas' third feature film, Todo lo que tú quieras (Anything You Want), was shown for the first time at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. His fourth movie as a director, Un mundo normal (A Normal World), was released in 2019.
