Achlorhydria facts for kids
Achlorhydria and hypochlorhydria happen when there is very little, or no stomach acid in your stomach. This condition can sometimes be connected to other health issues.
What Happens When Stomach Acid is Low?
When your stomach acid levels are too low, it can cause symptoms that feel a lot like acid reflux, such as a burning feeling in your chest. It also makes it harder for your body to digest proteins properly. This is because a special helper called pepsin needs a lot of acid to become active and do its job.
Having too little stomach acid can also allow too many bacteria to grow in your small intestine. When this happens, it can make it difficult for your body to absorb all the important nutrients and vitamins from the food you eat.
