Acmispon cytisoides, also known as Bentham's broom or Bentham's deerweed, is a special kind of plant in the pea family. It is only found in California.
What is Bentham's Deerweed?
This plant is endemic to central California. This means it naturally grows only in this specific area and nowhere else in the world! You can find it along the Central Coast and in the nearby coastal mountain ranges. It likes to grow near the ocean, but also on slopes and in canyons further inland.
What Does It Look Like?
Bentham's deerweed is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for many years, not just one season. It grows low to the ground, spreading out like a mat. Its leaves are made up of a few small, oval-shaped parts, each about 12 millimeters (less than half an inch) long.
Its Flowers
The plant produces clusters of up to 10 flowers. These flowers are a dull pinkish color and have dark veins. Each flower is just under 1 centimeter (about 0.4 inches) long.
