Acosia Red Elk facts for kids

Acosia Red Elk (born in 1980) is a talented jingle dress dancer. She is part of the Umatilla people from Oregon. Acosia is a descendant of the famous Chief Joseph. She became interested in dancing when she was 16. She learned by watching videos of other jingle dancers. She started dancing professionally in 1998. For ten years, she traveled to many pow wows each year.

About Acosia Red Elk

Acosia Red Elk grew up with parents who owned an auto body shop. When she was six, Acosia had an accident. She spent three months recovering in a special hospital in Portland. Her first jingle dress was a Christmas gift from her sister. She received it after her father passed away.

Champion Pow Wow Dancer

Acosia is a champion dancer. From 2004 to 2008, she won five world championships. These wins were at the Gathering of Nations pow wow. She also won in 2011, 2014, and 2015. For the 2015 competition, Acosia decided to enter at the last minute. She had to sew a new dress the day before leaving home.

In 2005, she won the Head Woman Dancer title at the Gathering. In 2014, she entered eight competitions and won all of them. Acosia appeared in Supaman's music video for his song Why?. They met while performing at different pow wows.

Pow Wow Yoga

In 2014, Red Elk tried her first Buti yoga class. She loved the experience so much. She then got a yoga teaching certificate. This allowed her to teach others. Acosia combined Buti yoga moves with jingle dress dancing steps. She created her own unique style called "pow wow yoga."

Other Appearances

In 2020, Acosia appeared in a music video. It was for the song "Who's Gonna Stop Me." This song was by Portugal. The Man and "Weird Al" Yankovic. In 2024, she played a Choctaw ancestor. This was in the Marvel Studios TV show Echo.
