History of Acquaviva
Acquaviva became part of San Marino in 1243. This means it officially joined the country and became one of its recognized towns.
Geography and Landmarks
Acquaviva is home to about 2,145 people, based on numbers from May 2018. It covers an area of 4.86 square kilometers. The town shares its borders with two other San Marino towns: Borgo Maggiore and San Marino City. It also borders two Italian towns: San Leo and Verucchio.
Acquaviva includes two smaller areas called curazie: Gualdicciolo and La Serra.
Important Historical Sites
There are two very important places in Acquaviva for the history of San Marino:
- Baldasserona Rock: This rock is believed to be where Saint Marino, the founder of San Marino, first stopped. It's a large crack in the rock and is thought to be his first refuge. Many people in San Marino believe their country's history truly began at this spot.
- Mount Cerreto: At the bottom of this hill, Saint Marino is said to have baptized the first Christians of the Titano community. This event is actually where Acquaviva got its name, which means "Living water."
Also, old documents show that in 885, a very important document called the "Placito Feretrano" was created at the "Castello di Monte Cerreto," which is now known as Acquaviva. This document is the oldest official paper of the Republic of San Marino.
Economy and Businesses
As of June 2014, Acquaviva had 324 companies. These businesses include:
- 100 general businesses
- 72 manufacturing companies (making things)
- 66 commercial businesses (buying and selling goods)
International Connections
Acquaviva has a special friendship with another town in a different country. This is called "town twinning."
