Borgo Maggiore is a town in the small country of San Marino. It's one of the nine "castelli," which are like districts or municipalities. You can find it at the bottom of Monte Titano, a famous mountain. With about 6,871 people (as of May 2018), Borgo Maggiore is the second-largest town in San Marino, right after Dogana.

History of Borgo Maggiore
This area was once known as Mercatale, which means "marketplace." Even today, it's the most important place for shopping and markets in San Marino. It might not have the most people, but its busy market and easy connection to San Marino City make it feel like a lively city hub.
Where is Borgo Maggiore?
Borgo Maggiore shares its borders with several other towns in San Marino. These include Serravalle, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, San Marino City, and Acquaviva. It also borders an Italian town called Verucchio.
The town of Borgo Maggiore is divided into eight smaller areas called curazie. These are:
- Cà Melone
- Cà Rigo
- Cailungo (which has two parts: di Sopra and di Sotto)
- San Giovanni sotto le Penne
- Valdragone (also with di Sopra and di Sotto parts)
- Ventoso
Getting Around Borgo Maggiore
Borgo Maggiore is a key spot for travel in San Marino.
Main Roads
The San Marino Highway ends here. This is a big road that connects Borgo Maggiore to Dogana, passing through Domagnano and Serravalle. Once you cross the border into Italy at Dogana, the highway continues to Rimini.
Cable Car Fun
One of the coolest ways to travel is by the Funivia di San Marino. This is an aerial cable car system that links Borgo Maggiore to the City of San Marino, which is higher up on the mountain. The cable car runs every fifteen minutes. The ride only takes about two minutes, but it offers amazing views! You can see all over San Marino, the nearby Province of Rimini, and even the Adriatic Sea. The main cable car station in Borgo Maggiore is located at Piazzale Campo della Fiera.
Bus Services
If you prefer buses, five of San Marino's eight bus lines stop in Borgo Maggiore. You can also catch coaches here that travel between Rimini in Italy and the City of San Marino.
Old Railway and Heliport
Long ago, from 1932 to 1944, there was an electric narrow-gauge railway that ran between Rimini and the City of San Marino. Borgo Maggiore was almost the last stop on this line. The railway was damaged during World War II and later closed. The old station is now a car park.
For a short time, from 1961 to 1969, there were even helicopter flights from Borgo Maggiore to Rimini's port. This service was later replaced by a parking lot for the cable car.
Places to See
- Piazza Grande: This is the main town square, a great place to explore.
International Connections
Borgo Maggiore has special connections with other towns around the world. This is called "town twinning."
