Ada J. (Jane) Graves (born April 14, 1870 – died July 8, 1918) was a British writer who wrote books for children. She was born in Benares, Bengal, which is in India. Her parents were James Speed Graves and Charlotte Graves. By 1881, her family was living in Midlothian, Scotland.

Ada J. Graves: A Children's Author

Ada J. Graves is remembered for two books published around the year 1900. These books were:

  • The House by the Railway (1896), which had pictures drawn by Rosa C. Petherick.
  • Four Little People and their Year at Silverhaven (1898), with illustrations by Florence Meyerheim.

She also wrote another book called The Little Brown House (1902).

Her Life and Family

Ada Graves was a distant relative of the famous war poet Robert Graves. She married Dr. Edward Rainsford Mumford (1876-1953) on October 23, 1905. Their wedding took place at the Newfoundland Cathedral. Her husband later became a missionary, working in India.

Ada Graves passed away on July 8, 1918, during an earthquake in Srimangal. Her sister, Frances Gordon, who was a suffragette (someone who fought for women's right to vote), survived the earthquake. Ada's niece, Ida Affleck Graves, also became a poet.
