Who Was Adalbero III?
Adalbero was the third son of Frederick of Luxembourg, who was a Count. His brother was Giselbert. In 1047, Adalbero took over as the Bishop of Metz. He became bishop after his uncle, Dietrich II, passed away.
A Respected Leader
Adalbero III was known for being very religious and well-educated. He managed his bishopric (the area a bishop oversees) very wisely. People respected him for his good judgment and his influence in politics.
Adalbero and Pope Leo IX
Adalbero III was a teacher to a young man named Bruno of Eguisheim-Dagsburg. Bruno later became the Bishop of Toul in 1026. This was a very important role.
Helping a Future Pope
In 1049, Adalbero III attended a big meeting in Worms. This meeting was organized by Emperor Henry III. At this meeting, Bruno was chosen to become the next Pope. Later, the people of Rome also chose Bruno by cheering for him. He then became Pope Leo IX.
Attending Important Councils
Adalbero III was also present at a special meeting called a council in Rome in 1050. During this council, Bishop Gerard of Toul was made a saint. This process is called being "canonized."
Adalbero's Land and Power
Emperor Henry IV gave Adalbero the County of Saarbrücken. This meant Adalbero was given control over this land and its people. This showed how much trust the Emperor had in Adalbero.
