Adam Bamme (died 1397) was an English goldsmith and politician. He was the Lord Mayor of London two times in the 1300s.

Early Life and Work

We do not know much about Adam Bamme's early life before 1369. He was a member of the Goldsmiths' Company. This was a special group for people who worked with gold and silver. Bamme became well-known for his excellent work. He even made things for a very important person, John of Gaunt.

Family Life

Adam Bamme was married two times. His second wife was a wealthy woman. He had one son named Sir Richard Bamme. Sir Richard's son later became the High Sheriff of Kent, which was an important local job. Another goldsmith, Henry Bamme, might have been Adam's brother.

Political Jobs

Adam Bamme held many important jobs in London during his life.

  • He was one of the Sheriffs of the City of London from 1382 to 1383. Sheriffs helped keep order in the city.
  • He was also an alderman for different parts of London. These parts included Aldersgate Ward, Cripplegate Ward, Cheap Ward, and Lime Street Ward. An alderman was a leader in a city area.

First Term as Mayor

Bamme became the Lord Mayor of London for the first time in 1390. He took over from William Venour. During this time, Bamme bought a lot of grain. He stored it to make sure the city would have food if there were shortages later. The people of London liked this very much. This action helped him become mayor again later. He also helped calm down disagreements between supporters of two past mayors, Nicholas Brembre and John Northampton.

Second Term as Mayor

Because he was so popular, Adam Bamme was chosen to be mayor again in 1397.

Death

Adam Bamme did not finish his second term as mayor. He died while in office on June 6, 1397. King Richard II then chose Richard Whittington to take his place. Adam Bamme was buried at St George Botolph Lane.
