Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adam Damlip, also known as George Bucker, was an English man who lived during the time of King Henry VIII. He is remembered as a Protestant martyr, which means he was put to death for his religious beliefs. He died sometime in the 1540s.

Who Was Adam Damlip?

Adam Damlip lived in a time when there were big changes happening in religion across Europe. He was from England.

His Journey to New Ideas

Adam Damlip traveled to Rome, a very important city for the Roman Catholic Church. After his visit, he started to disagree with some of the main church's teachings.

Later, he went to Calais. At that time, Calais was a part of England. While there, he learned about new religious ideas, which were called Protestant doctrines. He decided to follow these new beliefs.

Preaching and Trouble

Adam Damlip began to share his new religious ideas by preaching in Calais. However, not everyone agreed with him. Some people became his enemies because of what he taught.

Because of these disagreements, he was sent to Marshalsea Prison in London. While in prison, he met another Protestant named John Marbeck.

A Pardon and New Problems

Adam Damlip was later sent back to Calais. There was a special forgiveness called a "general pardon" given out at that time. This pardon meant he could not be put to death for his religious ideas (which was called heresy).

However, he still faced serious trouble. He was accused of spreading ideas that went against the king. He was also accused of being a "traitor" to the king. This was because he had accepted a coin from Cardinal Pole to help with his travel costs. Cardinal Pole was seen as an enemy of King Henry VIII.

His Final Days

Adam Damlip was put to death in Calais. He was executed in a very harsh way for being seen as a traitor against the king. The place where this happened in Calais can still be seen today.
