About Adam Silvera

Early Life and Writing Journey

Adam Silvera grew up in the South Bronx area of New York City. His mother, Persi Rosa, is of Puerto Rican background and works as a social worker. Adam started writing stories when he was about 10 or 11 years old. He began by writing fan fiction, which means he wrote new stories using characters from existing books or shows.

Before becoming a published author, Adam worked in different jobs. He was a barista, making coffee drinks, and a bookseller, helping people find books. He also reviewed books for a website called Shelf Awareness. Adam has shared that he sometimes struggles with his feelings, and he talks openly about these challenges.

His Books and Their Themes

Adam Silvera's first novel, More Happy Than Not, came out on June 2, 2015. This book became a New York Times best seller. It was also nominated for an award called the Lambda Literary Award. The story is about a young boy named Aaron Soto who lives in the Bronx. After a sad event in his family, Aaron spends time with a boy named Thomas. Aaron feels confused by his feelings for Thomas. He then explores a special memory procedure that can erase memories. The book talks about important topics for young people, like understanding different feelings and finding your identity. As of 2020, a TV series based on More Happy Than Not was being developed by HBO Max. Adam Silvera is one of the people helping to produce the show.

His second book, History Is All You Left Me, was published on January 17, 2017. Later that same year, his novel They Both Die at the End was released on September 5, 2017. This book was also planned to become a TV series. Adam Silvera announced that he would be the creator, writer, and executive producer for the TV show based on They Both Die at the End.

Adam Silvera also wrote a book called What If It's Us with another author, Becky Albertalli. This book was published in 2018. The rights to make a movie from this book were sold in 2018.

In 2020, Adam Silvera started a fantasy series called Infinity Cycle. The first book in this series is Infinity Son.

Recognition and Impact

In June 2020, Adam Silvera was recognized as one of fifty heroes by Queerty. This was in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade. He was named for helping to lead the nation toward fairness and acceptance for all people.

Even though his books are very popular with young adult readers, some of Adam Silvera's novels have been part of discussions about what books should be in schools. For example, More Happy Than Not was removed from some school libraries and classrooms in Florida during 2022-2023.
