The Adams County Courthouse is located in Decatur, Indiana. This city is the "county seat" for Adams County, Indiana. A county seat is the main town where the county government works. The courthouse was built between 1872 and 1873. It cost about $78,979 back then. The building was designed by J. C. Johnson. He started out as a carpenter and taught himself how to be an architect.

How it was Built

The building was constructed by Christian Boseker. He was from Fort Wayne, Indiana. The courthouse is made of red brick. It also has fancy stone decorations. The building is designed in a style called Second Empire architecture. This style was popular in the late 1800s.

Special Memorials Outside

The Adams County Courthouse and three special objects nearby were added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 2008. The National Register lists important historical places in the United States.

The objects included are:

  • Peace Monument: This is a statue made of limestone. It shows a female figure.
  • Elephant Rock: This is a large rock that acts as a memorial. It honors the author Gene Stratton-Porter. The rock is a type of stone called gneiss. It has a bronze plaque on it.
  • Pioneer Memorial: This is a bronze plaque and a stand. It was put in place in 1936. It remembers the early settlers of the area.

A Featured Historic Place

The Adams County Courthouse was chosen as a "featured property of the week." This was part of a program by the National Park Service. The program started in July 2008. The courthouse was the 12th property to be featured.
