This is an epitaph (a special memorial) for Adelog in Hildesheim Cathedral.

Adelog von Dorstadt was an important leader in the church. He was the Bishop of Hildesheim from 1171 until he passed away on September 20, 1190.

Adelog's Life and Work

Adelog was born into a noble family from Saxony. This meant his family had a high social standing. Around 1160, he became a canon at Hildesheim Cathedral. A canon is a type of priest who works closely with a bishop. He also became a provost in Goslar. A provost is a senior church official.

Adelog and the Emperor

During Adelog's time, there was a big disagreement. It was between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and Henry the Lion. Henry was a powerful duke from the Welf family. Adelog was careful about which side to support. In the end, he chose to support the Emperor.

When Henry the Lion lost his power in 1180, Adelog gained more freedom. He became almost like an independent ruler in his church area. Even with the disagreements, he still worked in Brunswick. This was a city where Henry the Lion's family lived.

Adelog the Builder

Bishop Adelog was known for building and fixing churches. He helped rebuild St. Michael's Church, Hildesheim. This church had been damaged by a fire in 1186. He also made sure that the St. Godehard, Hildesheim basilica was finished. A basilica is a large and important church.

Adelog also helped build the Neuwerk monastery in Goslar. He supported the creation of the Our Lady Altar in Brunswick Cathedral. He officially opened this altar on September 8, 1188. Henry the Lion was even there for the event. In 1189, Adelog also approved a new Augustinian nunnery in Dorstadt. A nunnery is a place where nuns live and pray.

Adelog died on September 20, 1190, in Hildesheim. He was buried in Hildesheim Cathedral. His grave is in the main part of the cathedral. It is made of beautifully carved sandstone.
