Ademir Marques de Menezes (born November 8, 1922 – died May 11, 1996) was a famous Brazilian football player. Many people think he was one of the best forwards in football history. He had a special nickname, "Queixada," which means "jaw," because of his prominent jawline. Ademir was also the top goalscorer in the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

Ademir's Club Career

Ademir started his football journey with a team called Sport Recife. After that, he joined Vasco da Gama. He played for Vasco in two different periods: from 1942 to 1945, and then again from 1948 to 1956. In between, he also played for Fluminense for a short time.

During his career, Ademir won many championships:

  • He won the Pernambuco State League twice with Sport Recife (in 1941 and 1942).
  • He won the Rio State League five times with Vasco da Gama (in 1945, 1949, 1950, 1952, and 1956).
  • He also won another Rio State League title with Fluminense in 1946.

Ademir was a fantastic scorer. He was the top scorer in the league in 1949 with 30 goals and again in 1950 with 25 goals. He stopped playing football in 1956. After retiring, he worked as a sports commentator, a coach, and a businessman.

Ademir's International Career

Ademir is most famous for what he did in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. This big tournament was held in his home country, Brazil. He played alongside other amazing forwards like Zizinho and Jair. Ademir won the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer in the competition, with 9 goals. He also helped his team by setting up 6 other goals.

He scored the very first goal in a competitive match at the famous Maracanã stadium. Even with his incredible goals, Brazil did not win the final match against Uruguay. This loss was a huge disappointment for Brazil and is still remembered as the "Maracanazo".

Ademir also had great success in the Copa América tournament. He played in this competition in 1945, 1946, 1949, and 1953. He scored 13 goals and made 3 assists in 18 games. In 1949, he scored three goals in the final play-off against Paraguay, helping Brazil win the tournament! He also won the Panamerican Championship with Brazil in 1952, scoring two goals in the final match against Chile. In total, Ademir played 39 games for Brazil and scored 32 goals between 1945 and 1953.

How Ademir Played Football

Ademir was a very fast and strong striker. He could shoot powerfully with both feet. He started his career playing as a winger on the left side of the field. Later, he moved to the center, becoming a main striker. He was known for confusing defenders with his amazing skills and excellent finishing.

People at the time said he was an amazing ball juggler who knew every trick. He would cause problems for opposing teams by quickly changing his speed and tricking his opponents with very fast moves. He was great at controlling the ball in any situation and could speed up very quickly.
