Adriano Emperado was a famous Filipino-Hawaiian martial artist. He was born on June 16, 1926, and passed away on April 4, 2009. He is known as one of the five people who created a special self-defense system called Kajukenbo.
Early Training in Martial Arts
When Adriano Emperado was young, he lived in Honolulu, Hawaii. He started learning a Filipino martial art called Escrima. This early training was very important for him. It helped him later when he was creating Kajukenbo.
Adriano Emperado also became very interested in Kenpo Karate. He trained for many years in Kenpo. He even earned a high rank, a fifth-degree black belt. He achieved this under the teaching of William K.S Chow.
Developing and Teaching Kajukenbo
Adriano Emperado and his brother, Joe Emperado, opened the very first school for Kajukenbo. This was a big step for the new martial art.
In 1959, Emperado started adding parts of Wushu into Kajukenbo. Wushu is a Chinese martial art. Adriano Emperado spent his whole life teaching martial arts to others. In 1991, Black Belt Magazine honored him. They named him their Instructor of the Year.
