About Adrienne Kennaway
Adrienne Kennaway, whose full name is Adrienne Prudence Moore, grew up traveling a lot. She lived in many different places around the world. Part of her childhood was spent in Kenya, a country in Africa.
Her time in Kenya really inspired her early books. For example, she illustrated books like Game Park Holiday (1967) and The Elephant's Heart and other stories (1968). These books were about animals and life in Africa. She used the name Adrienne Moore for her illustrations back then.
Adrienne Kennaway became very well-known for illustrating animal folk tales. These stories were retold by an author named Mwenye Hadithi. Her pictures of African wildlife were bright and colorful, painted with watercolors.
One of her most famous books is Greedy Zebra (1984). This story explains how different animals got their unique colors and patterns. It also shows how the zebra's stripes came from being a bit too greedy!
The book that won her the Greenaway Medal was Crafty Chameleon, published in 1987. This clever story shows how a small Chameleon outsmarts bigger animals like Leopard and Crocodile.
Later in her career, Adrienne Kennaway continued to create animal stories. She also wrote and illustrated books about natural history from all over the world. Today, she lives in County Kerry, which is in Ireland.
