The Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaans: Afrikaanse Taalmonument) is a special place in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa. It is the only monument in the world built to honor a language. This monument stands on a hill, looking over the town.

It was finished in 1975. The monument was built to celebrate 100 years since Afrikaans was officially recognized as a language separate from Dutch.

What the Monument Looks Like

The monument is made of tall, tapering shapes. Some parts curve outwards (convex), and some curve inwards (concave). These shapes show how different languages and cultures have influenced Afrikaans.

They also represent important moments in South Africa's history. Here are some of the ideas behind the monument's design:

  • Clear West: This part shows the European origins of the language.
  • Magical Africa: This represents the African influences on Afrikaans.
  • Bridge: This symbolizes the connection between Europe and Africa.
  • Afrikaans: This part stands for the language itself.
  • Republic: This remembers when South Africa became a republic in 1961.
  • Malay language and culture: This highlights the important role of Malay culture in shaping Afrikaans.

Important Sayings

At the entrance of the monument, there is a large stone with words carved into it. These are quotes from two important Afrikaans poets.

N.P. van Wyk Louw's Words

One quote is from N.P. van Wyk Louw. He wrote about Afrikaans connecting Western Europe and Africa. He called it a "bridge" between these two parts of the world.

He also said that Afrikaans was shaped by the new land and landscape of South Africa. He believed the language became a "gleaming tool" for people to use.

C.J. Langenhoven's Words

Another quote is from C.J. Langenhoven. He used an image of poles and a rising arc to show how fast Afrikaans was growing.

He imagined the language's growth as a line quickly rising higher and higher. He believed Afrikaans would continue to grow and reach new heights.
