The Afrixalus osorioi is a small frog that belongs to the family Hyperoliidae. You can find this frog in several African countries. These include Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, western Kenya, and Uganda. It's also known by a few common names. Some of these are the Angola banana frog or Osorio's spiny reed frog. The name osorioi was given to honor Balthazar Osório, a Portuguese scientist who studied fish.

What Does the Afrixalus Osorioi Look Like?

These frogs are quite small. Adult males are about 2.7 to 3.1 centimeters (about 1.1 to 1.2 inches) long. Females are a bit larger, measuring 3.2 to 3.5 centimeters (about 1.3 to 1.4 inches) long.

They have a mix of light and dark brown colors on their backs. Often, they have a dark rectangular spot on their back. This spot can stretch all the way to their rear end. Male frogs have tiny, scattered bumps on their heads, bodies, and legs. These bumps are usually hard to see. The upper part of their lower leg, called the tibia, is light in color.

When male frogs want to attract a mate, they make a special sound. Their call is a series of quick clicks. They can click very fast, about 18 to 30 times every second!

Where Does the Afrixalus Osorioi Live and How Is It Doing?

The Afrixalus osorioi lives in the central African rainforest belt. You can find them in forests that have been changed by humans. This includes forests that are growing back or areas that used to be forests, like old farmlands.

These frogs lay their eggs in small pools of water. These can be temporary pools that dry up or permanent ones. They like water bodies that have plants hanging over them. They can even use human-made water spots, like old drums, for breeding.

The Afrixalus osorioi is a very common frog. It can also adapt well to different environments. This means it's not likely to be in danger anytime soon. You can find this frog in several protected areas, which helps keep them safe.
