The Agate Pass Bridge is a cool steel bridge in Washington state. It connects Bainbridge Island to the Kitsap Peninsula. This bridge helps people travel easily between Seattle (using a ferry) and the Kitsap Peninsula.

It was built in 1950. Before the bridge, people used a car ferry to cross Agate Pass. The bridge made travel much faster and simpler!

Discover the Agate Pass Bridge

The Agate Pass Bridge is a type of bridge called a cantilever bridge. It is made from strong structural steel. The bridge stretches over a waterway called Agate Pass.

How Big is the Agate Pass Bridge?

The bridge is quite long! It measures about 1,229 feet (375 meters) from one end to the other. It stands high above the water, about 75 feet (23 meters) up. This height allows boats to pass underneath safely. The main part of the bridge, between its supports, is 300 feet (91 meters) wide.

Building and Paying for the Bridge

Building the Agate Pass Bridge cost about $1.35 million back in 1950. That was a lot of money then! For a short time, from October 1950 to October 1951, people had to pay a small fee, called a toll, to cross the bridge. This helped pay back the money used to build it. After just one year, the bridge was paid off, and the toll was removed.

A Historic Washington Landmark

The Agate Pass Bridge is an important part of history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a special place that should be protected for future generations.
