Agatha Bennett (born 1919, died 2006) was an American artist. She was famous for making beautiful quilts. Agatha was part of a special group of quilters called the Gee's Bend quilting collective. Her mother-in-law, Delia Bennett, was also a quilter in this group. You can even see Agatha's artwork in a major museum, the High Museum of Art.

Growing Up in Gee's Bend

Agatha Bennett was born in a place called Gee's Bend, Alabama. She grew up there on a large farm, raised by her grandparents, Emma and Jacob Coleman.

In 1940, she married Reverend Pernell Bennett. They had a big family with 14 children! To support their family, they worked very hard. They grew most of their own food on their farm, which is called subsistence farming. They also worked in factories that canned food and at wood mills.

A Talented Quilter

Agatha Bennett was an important member of the famous Gee's Bend quilting collective. This group of women from Gee's Bend created unique and colorful quilts. Their quilts are known around the world for their special designs and patterns.

Her Lasting Impact

Agatha Bennett left behind a wonderful legacy through her art. A group called the Souls Grown Deep Foundation learned a lot about Agatha's life and how she became a quilter. They did this by talking with her husband. This helped to share her story and her amazing artwork with many people.
