Agave titanota, also known as the chalk agave, is a cool plant from Mexico. It's a type of flowering plant that stays green all year. This plant is a succulent, which means it stores water in its thick leaves. It's also a perennial, so it lives for more than two years. You can find it growing naturally in Oaxaca, Mexico.

About the Chalk Agave

Agave titanota is a medium-sized plant. It usually grows to be about 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm) tall. It can spread out to be 2 to 3 feet (60-90 cm) wide. This agave forms a single "rosette" of leaves. A rosette is like a circular pattern of leaves that grow close together.

What Does It Look Like?

Its leaves are wide and a whitish-green color. They can be 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm) long and about 5 inches (12 cm) wide. The leaves are usually narrower at the bottom and wider near the tip. They also have different kinds of spines along their edges.

Sometimes, this plant makes small baby plants called offsets. These offsets grow from the base of the main plant.

When Does It Flower?

When a chalk agave gets old enough, it might grow a very tall flower stalk. This stalk can be 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) tall! Yellow flowers bloom on this stalk.

However, after the plant flowers, it dies. This is because Agave titanota is a monocarpic plant. This means it flowers only once in its lifetime before it dies.

How to Care for It

The chalk agave can handle temperatures as low as 27°F (minus 3°C). But it's best to grow it in a place that is protected from very cold frosts.

This plant has won an award called the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This award means it's a great plant for gardens. It grows well in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. These zones describe areas where certain plants can survive the winter.

Sometimes, chalk agaves can get tiny bugs called scale insects. They can also get a problem called chlorosis. This happens when the leaves turn yellow because they don't have enough magnesium.

Special Types of Chalk Agave

There are different types of Agave titanota that people have grown. These are called cultivars. Some popular ones include 'White Ice', 'Filigree', and 'Solar Eclipse'.
