Agriocnemis is a type of small, delicate insect known as a damselfly. These insects are part of a family called Coenagrionidae, which includes many different kinds of damselflies. You might know Agriocnemis damselflies by their common name: wisps.
Wisps are found in many places around the world. They live across Africa, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Australia, and on islands in the Pacific Ocean. They are known for being very small compared to other damselflies.
What are the different kinds of Wisps?
The group of damselflies called Agriocnemis has many different species, or types. Scientists have discovered and named over 40 different kinds! Each species has its own unique features, but they all share the general characteristics of wisps.
Some of the known species include:
- Agriocnemis argentea, also called the silver wisp.
- Agriocnemis dobsoni, known as the tropical wisp.
- Agriocnemis exilis, which is sometimes called the little wisp.
- Agriocnemis femina, often referred to as the pinhead wisp.
- Agriocnemis pygmaea, known as the pygmy wisp, one of the smallest.
- Agriocnemis rubricauda, or the red-rumped wisp.
Scientists continue to study these fascinating insects to learn more about their lives and where they live.
