The striped swampdragon (scientific name: Agrionoptera longitudinalis biserialis) is a type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Libellulidae family, which includes many common dragonflies. This amazing insect is known for its unique looks and where it lives.
About the Striped Swampdragon
The striped swampdragon is a fairly large dragonfly. It can have a wingspan of about 100 millimeters (about 4 inches). Its body length is around 55 millimeters (about 2 inches).
What They Look Like
This dragonfly has a special look. It has a bright yellow stripe on its thorax. The thorax is the middle part of an insect's body where the wings and legs are attached. It also has yellow markings on its dark-colored abdomen. The abdomen is the long tail-like part of the dragonfly. Its face, called the frons, is a shiny metallic green color.
Where They Live
You can find the striped swampdragon in two main places: Australia and New Guinea. In Australia, it lives along the coast of Queensland. Its range stretches from the very top of Cape York Peninsula down to the area around Rockhampton.
These dragonflies like to live near water. Their favorite spots are shaded pools and tree holes. These places provide the perfect environment for them to hunt and lay their eggs.
