The Agrodome is a super fun farm-themed park located in Rotorua, New Zealand. It's a popular place for tourists and locals to visit and learn all about farm life. It was started way back in 1971 by two clever guys, Godfrey Bowen and George Harford. Today, it is mostly owned by a company called Ngāi Tahu Tourism.

History of the Agrodome

The Agrodome first opened its doors in 1971. It was created by Godfrey Bowen, who was a world champion at sheep shearing, and George Harford, a local farmer. They wanted to create a special farm theme park. The New Zealand government even helped fund it to boost tourism. Godfrey's brother, Ivan Bowen, who was also great at shearing, became the main showman at the Agrodome.

New Kiwi Home

In December 2023, something exciting happened at the Agrodome. The National Kiwi Hatchery, which helps baby kiwi birds hatch and grow, moved to a brand new facility there. Before this, it was located at Rainbow Springs.

Fun Attractions and Activities

The Agrodome is packed with cool things to see and do, especially if you love animals!

Amazing Animals

In 2016, the Agrodome welcomed three huge Clydesdale horses. These gentle giants were once a popular attraction in Devonport, Auckland. They even had acting roles in famous movies like The Hobbit and the TV show Xena: Warrior Princess.

Since 2018, the Agrodome has also been home to special Valais Blacknose sheep. These sheep are quite new to New Zealand and are known for their unique black faces and fluffy white wool. With these new additions, the Agrodome now has 26 different types of sheep!

Farm Shows and Events

The Agrodome hosts three farm shows every day, and each one lasts about an hour. During the show, you can watch expert sheep shearers in action. You also get to learn all about different farm animals and what they do. These shows are both educational and really entertaining for everyone who visits.

The Agrodome is also a place for bigger events. The yearly Rotorua A&P (agricultural and pastoral) Show is held there. In 2016, the New Zealand secondary schools cross country championships also took place at the Agrodome.

Who Owns the Agrodome?

For many years, the Agrodome was owned by the Bowen and Harford families, who started it. In 2006, these families also bought a ship called the Lakeland Queen. This ship is used for restaurant dining and cruises on Lake Rotorua.

In 2011, a company called Ngāi Tahu Tourism became a business partner. They have a lot of experience in the tourism world. Ngāi Tahu Tourism now owns 75% of the Agrodome, helping it continue to be a fantastic place for visitors.
