A Look at Aguilares' History
Aguilares started around 1870. It got its name from the first families who settled there and became ranchers. These were the Aguilar brothers: José, Locario, Francisco, Próspero, and Librado.
In 1881, Aguilares became a stop on the Texas-Mexican Railroad. This was a big deal because it connected the community to other places. Nine years later, in 1890, Aguilares even got its own post office.
At one point, in 1910, it was thought that 1,500 people lived there. However, this number was likely much higher than the actual population. Just four years later, in 1914, reports said only about 300 people lived in Aguilares. The Aguilar family owned a store, which was one of only two businesses in the community back then.
For a short time, Aguilares seemed to have a bright future when Oil was found nearby in Oilton. But even with the railroad, the town started to lose people. Many residents moved to the larger county seat of Laredo, which was growing.
By the 1930s, the post office in Aguilares closed down. In 1939, the population was only ten people. It grew a little to twenty-five by 1945. However, by the 1990 U.S. Census, the population was back down to ten residents.
