Ah Suytok Tutul Xiu came from a place called Nonohual. We don't know exactly where Nonohual was. It might have been in the Peten area. It could also have been another name for Potonchán in Tabasco or Tula. He also had a special nickname, "Hun Uitzil Chac." In the Mayan language, this means 'the only mountain of Chac.'
Founding the City of Uxmal
Ancient Mayan books, called the Chilam Balam, tell us about Ah Suytok Tutul Xiu. These books are like historical records for the Maya.
- The Chilam Balam of Tizimín says he founded Uxmal in the year 669.
- However, the Chilam Balam of Mani says he founded it earlier, in the year 620.
Even with these different dates, Ah Suytok Tutul Xiu is always given credit for starting the city of Uxmal. It was a very important city for the Maya.
