Aibar (also known as Aybar, or Oibar in the Basque language) is a historic town located in northern Spain. It is part of the Navarre region, which is an autonomous community. Aibar is known for its long history and its connection to important events in the region.

A Glimpse into Aibar's Past

Aibar has been a significant place for many centuries. Its history includes battles and changes in who ruled the land.

Early History and Key Events

In the year 882, a battle took place near Aybar. A leader named García Jiménez of Pamplona was killed here. He was fighting against the forces of the Emir of Córdoba, a powerful ruler from a Muslim kingdom in southern Spain. This battle shows how important Aibar was as a location during that time.

Aibar and the Kingdom of Aragon

Later, in 1035, Aibar became connected to the Kingdom of Aragon. This happened when Ramiro, the son of a famous king called Sancho the Great, inherited lands in Aragon. Ramiro also received the town of Aibar as part of his inheritance. This event linked Aibar to a new and growing kingdom.

Becoming Part of Navarre

By 1062, Aibar officially became a community within the Kingdom of Navarre. This meant it was governed as part of Navarre, which is the region it is still in today. One of the most well-known buildings in Aibar is the Casa Santura. This house was once home to the important Perez-Erdozain family, adding to the town's rich heritage.
