Becoming a Judge
Early Education and Law Studies
Aileen Donnelly studied at University College Dublin. She earned a special law degree called a BCL in 1986. Later, in 1995, she got a master's degree in equality studies. She also trained at the King's Inns, which is a place where lawyers learn their skills.
Starting Her Legal Career
In 1988, Aileen Donnelly became a barrister, which means she could represent people in court. From 1996 to 2002, she was part of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL). This group works to protect people's rights. In 2004, she became a senior barrister, known as a Senior Counsel. She has also written books about different areas of law, like tax law and human rights.
Her Work as a Judge
High Court Judge (2014-2019)
Aileen Donnelly was appointed a Judge of the High Court in September 2014. In this role, she handled many important cases. One of her main jobs was dealing with extradition cases. Extradition is when a person accused of a crime in one country is sent back to another country to face charges.
In 2018, she made a notable decision about sending a man to Poland. She paused the extradition because she wanted to make sure the man would get a fair trial there. She asked the Court of Justice of the European Union for advice on this matter. Her final decision was that the man's rights to a fair trial were not specifically at risk.
Court of Appeal Judge (2019-2023)
In June 2019, Judge Donnelly became a Judge of the Court of Appeal. This court reviews decisions made by lower courts, like the High Court. She was appointed after another judge, Mary Irvine, moved to the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court Judge (2023-Present)
The Irish Government chose Aileen Donnelly to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland in May 2023. The Supreme Court is the highest court in Ireland. She officially started this important role in June 2023.
