Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos (born September 18, 1837 – died November 28, 1880) was an important religious leader from Portugal. He became the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Goa, a region that was part of Portuguese India.
He was born in Funchal, a city on the island of Madeira, Portugal. His parents were Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos Esmeraldo Rolim de Moura and Augusta Correia Vasques Salvago de Brito de Olival.
Early Life and Church Career
Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos began his journey in the church in Portugal. On March 6, 1871, he was chosen to be a special assistant bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Funchal. This role is called a coadjutor bishop.
He was officially made a bishop on May 7, 1871. He then became the main Bishop of Funchal on October 27, 1872, after the previous bishop passed away.
Becoming Archbishop of Goa
Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos was appointed Archbishop of Goa on July 23, 1874. This was a very important position in the church. He served as the Archbishop for six years.
During his time in Goa, he was also a member of the Governing Council of Portuguese India. This council helped manage the Portuguese territories in India. He was part of this council in 1877 and 1878.
He passed away on November 28, 1880, while still serving as the Archbishop of Goa.
