How Aizkraukle Became a Town
The modern town of Aizkraukle started in 1961. It was built to house the people working on the big Pļaviņas power plant nearby. At first, it was called Stučka. This name honored Pēteris Stučka, a Latvian communist.
In 1967, Stučka officially became a town. It also became the main center for the Stučkas District. Later, in 1990, the town's name was changed to Aizkraukle. This new name came from the nearby railway station. The name "Aizkraukle" means "beyond the Kraukle River."
