Exploring Ajamil's Landscape

Ajamil is surrounded by beautiful natural features. Two rivers flow through the area. These are the Vargas River, also called Rabanera, and the Vadillos River. Both of these rivers flow into the Leza River.

Mountains and High Places

To the south of Ajamil, you'll find the northern parts of the Sierra del Hayedo de Santiago mountains. These mountains connect to Cerro Castillo, which is 1,683 meters high. The highest point in the municipality is Canto Hincado, reaching 1,758 meters.

Just west of the village is the Sierra de Camero Viejo. This mountain range helps shape the area around Ajamil. As you move north and east, the land gets lower. Some peaks in these areas include Potezuela (1,510 meters) and The Madorra (1,470 meters). The land also gets lower as the Vargas and Vadillos rivers flow through their valleys.

A Look Back at Ajamil's Past

Ajamil has a long and interesting history.

Becoming Part of a Lordship

In 1366, Henry II de Trastámara became king in Calahorra. He gave the Lordship of Cameros to a nobleman named Juan Ramirez de Arellano. This was a reward for his help. Ajamil was one of the villages that became part of this lordship.

Later, the power over Ajamil went to the counts of Aguilar and the lords of Cameros. This system, where lords owned the land and people, lasted until 1812. That's when the Spanish Constitution ended the feudal system.

Ajamil's Population in the Past

A census from the 16th century counted the population of Castilla. It showed that Ajamil had about 50 homes. This meant around 300 people lived there at that time.

Changing Provinces

Before 1833, Ajamil was part of the province of Soria. It had its own independent laws. But on November 30, 1833, a new province called Logroño was created. Ajamil then became part of this new province.
