A Look Back in Time
The first time Ajo was mentioned in writing was way back in the year 923. This was in an old book called the "Liber Testamentarum" from the Oviedo Cathedral. In this book, King Ordoño II of León gave the church of San Juan de Asio (which is Ajo) as a gift.
There's a fun story that the town's name, Ajo, comes from the Spanish word for "garlic." People used to say that the town smelled like garlic because its residents ate so much of it! However, this is just a popular story and not a proven fact.
