Santoña is a lively town on the eastern coast of Cantabria, a region in northern Spain. It sits right by a beautiful bay that shares its name. The town is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Santander, the capital city of Cantabria.
Santoña has two main parts: a flat urban area where most people live, and a hilly area. To the east, you'll find Mount Buciero. To the north are Brusco and the sandy Berria beach. San Martin beach marks the southern edge, while a busy fishing harbor and marshlands are to the west.
In August 1719, during a conflict called the War of the Quadruple Alliance, French forces, with help from the British Royal Navy, attacked Santoña. They successfully captured the town. Many important naval supplies were taken or destroyed. This event, along with the capture of San Sebastian, helped pressure King Philip V to agree to peace. He later signed the Treaty of The Hague (1720).
