Akbar Tea is a well-known tea brand from Sri Lanka. It is owned by a company called Akbar Brothers Ltd. They are famous for selling many different kinds of tea, like black tea, green tea, flavored teas, and herbal teas.
Akbar Brothers is actually the biggest tea exporter from Sri Lanka. This means they send more tea from Sri Lanka to other countries than any other company there.
The Story of Akbar Tea
The Akbar Tea brand started in 1969. It was created by two brothers, Abbas Akbarally and Inayet Akbarally. They decided to leave their family's older company, Hebtulabhoys and Co., to start their own business called Akbar Brothers.
Their family has a long history in the food business, going all the way back to 1864. That's when their great-grandfather, Shaikh Hebtulabhoy, moved from India to Sri Lanka. He started a company that bought and sold food.
Later, his son, Tyeabally Shaikh Hebtulabhoy, started a tea company in 1907. This company, M. S. Hebtulabhoy and Company Limited, began shipping tea to other countries.
Growing the Business
Within just three years of starting, Akbar Brothers was already sending tea to big tea markets in the Middle East and other parts of the world. In 1972, Akbar Brothers Limited became an official company. The brothers' father, Shaikh Akbarally, who used to be the chairman of Hebtulabhoys and Co., joined his sons in their new business.
The company is still owned and managed by members of the same family today. It continues to be Sri Lanka’s largest tea exporter. The main company, Akbar Brothers Ltd, also works in other areas like cement, wind power, and hydro power.
In July 2022, the company grew even more by starting operations in Oman.
Where Akbar Tea is Made
The company has two large production places in Sri Lanka. These are located in Kelaniya and Wattala. Each place is about 100,000 m2 (1,100,000 sq ft) in size. They use modern machines from countries like Germany, Italy, and Japan to make their tea products.
