The Story of Akbar Tea
How It All Started
The story of Akbar Tea began in 1969. Two brothers, Abbas Akbarally and Inayet Akbarally, started a new company called Akbar Brothers. They came from a family that had been in the food business for a very long time.
Their great-grandfather, Shaikh Hebtulabhoy, moved from India to Sri Lanka in 1864. He started a company that bought and sold food in a place called Pettah. Later, his son, Tyeabally Shaikh Hebtulabhoy, started a tea company in 1907. This company began sending tea to other countries.
Growing the Business
After starting Akbar Brothers, Abbas and Inayet quickly began sending their tea to big markets. Within three years, their tea was being sold in the Middle East and other parts of the world.
In 1972, Akbar Brothers Limited became an official company. Their father, Shaikh Akbarally, joined them. He had been the chairman of the family's older company.
Akbar Tea Today
Today, Akbar Tea is still owned and managed by members of the same family. It remains Sri Lanka's largest tea exporter. This means they send more tea out of Sri Lanka than any other company.
The company has a very large factory in the Kelaniya area of Colombo. It is about 276,000 square feet! The main company, Akbar Group, also works in other areas. These include building properties, healthcare, and making electricity.
In July 2022, Akbar Tea expanded its business. They started selling their products in Oman, a country in the Middle East.
