The Akhalgori Municipality is a region in Georgia. It is also known as the Leningor District by some. This area has different names in different languages. In Georgian, it is called Georgian: ახალგორის მუნიციპალიტეტი. In Ossetian, it is Ossetian: Ленингоры район, romanized: Leningory rajon.
Georgia sees Akhalgori as part of its Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. However, another group, based in Tskhinval, calls it Leningor. They say Alan Djussoev is the current head of this area. Before a conflict in 2008, the municipality was split. Georgia controlled the eastern part, and South Ossetia controlled the western part.
In 2002, the Georgian-controlled part of Akhalgori had about 7,700 people. Around 2,000 of them lived in the main town. Some of the biggest villages were Ikorta, Korinta, and Largvisi. Most people living there were Georgian (about 6,520). There were also about 1,110 Ossetian people.
After the 2008 war, many people left the area. More than 5,000 Georgians moved away. This was about 70% of all the people living there. They said they felt unsafe and were treated unfairly. Unlike some other places, buildings in Akhalgori were not often destroyed. But there were some reports of attacks and worries among people.
Different Views on Akhalgori
This area is seen differently by various groups. According to the way administrative divisions of South Ossetia are set up, this municipality is part of the Leningor District. This means different governments have different ideas about who controls the land.
